Toronto is a huge city. We’re not talking about Hicksville, Canada. We’re talking about a big, thriving, busy metropolis with lots of tall buildings and tourists. So one would be safe to assume you could rent a car in downtown Toronto even at, say, 9:00 p.m., right?
WRONG. You know what they say about assuming… You make an… well you know how it goes.
The Boyfriend and I are supposed to fly into Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ) tonight via Porter Airlines. It’s a small airport only a five-minute ferry ride away from downtown Toronto. According to my perfectly hatched plan, The Boyfriend is supposed to pick up the car when he arrives at 9 p.m. and we’ll be ready to head for Waterloo when I get in an hour later. I had assumed we would have no trouble renting a car in downtown Toronto. There I go assuming again…
I plugged our details into Expedia to see what availability and prices looked like.
I was shocked when this came back:
Then I started looking up individual car rental companies, thinking maybe there’s something wrong with Expedia. Hertz: Closes at 6 p.m. Avis: Closes at 8:30 p.m. Budget: Closes at 5:30 p.m. Alamo, Enterprise, National — all closed.
Holy Complications Batman, I can’t find a car rental place open later than 8:30 p.m. in downtown Toronto. Am I missing something? Any frequent Toronto travelers who know the secret to finding a rental car near YTZ airport? Anyone else who had the same experience and want to chime in on how ridiculous this is?
UPDATE: The Boyfriend is now flying into Pearson International Airport in Toronto, will pick up a car and pick me up at Billy Bishop Airport. Will let you know how it all goes…
